Tonight's night sky

Did any of you(those of you in the Northern Hemisphere) happen to see the moon this evening? The moon with two rather bright objects (obviously planets) near it? I knew this had to be something unusual so I grabbed my camera when I got home and went outdoors to photograph it. Then I googled it. Sure enough it's a rare alignment of Jupiter and Venus with the moon. That was one of many articles about it.

That's what I saw!

Wasn't it pretty? :-) I'm glad I managed to photograph it.

Oh wow! That's pretty cool.

Yes, it was lovely. Hopefully this configuration will last a few more days. You're supposed to get some sort of lunar eclipse with venus in Europe (I don't know if that already happened...)

good pic for a little camera...
... next one scheduled in 44 years!

I'm amazed my inexpensive digital camera did so well! Best night pic I've ever taken.

If I'm still around in 44 years I'll ask the nursing home staff to wheel me outdoors to have a look at the sky!

I don't expect to make 83...
these days, I am shooting for 50.
But if I am still around, I will look!

That is so kewl! We could not have seen anything with the snow and overcast skies. Even if it would be visible with all the Chicago light pollution. Our skies do not get nearly as dark... Thanks for the picture!

I'm lucky to live across the street from a softball field (it's adjacent to an elementary school). It's a little darker here than most streets in the city. Sometimes I can even see a few stars!

[identity profile] cluelessinchi.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can see some as well but it sure is dark in more rural areas. I was up at 4AM last night and between the snow and the light pollution it was just an over cast sky. It really was not much darker then at 4AM than it was at 4PM.

The whole sky is light up for miles, miles and miles around Chicago.

Usually I'm kinda cynical about these celestial alignments, but that was strangely beautiful tonight.

I wonder if we'll get a repeat performance this evening? I'll be looking at the sky...

Cool! It was rainy and cloudy last night here, so I'm glad that you got a photo.

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you'll have better luck tonight?

[identity profile] helygen.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh I noticed something similar the other evening on my way home from work - nearly crashed the car, trying to figure out what I was seeing! Lovely photo :)

Ooh and thanks for the link :)

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very glad you didn't crash your car! How nice that you got to see the moon and planets too. :-)

[identity profile] neptunia67.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
We had a clear sky and the moon and planets looked SO cool. I'm impressed with your picture!

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I love my new camera! Point-and-click with 4x optical zoom. That's all I was using. (On its night setting) I'm glad you got to see the sky too. :)

my dad was so excited about it he called me and tolf me to take the girls and go look outside... i'm so glad we did! they are teenagers, and not easily impressed by such things. perhaps it will stick in their memories for the next 44 years and they can tell their kids "boring stories" about grandpa calling on a funny old device called a cell phone so that they could leave the store they were in to go out to the parking lot to see it happen years ago...

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they will hopefully still be alive to see the next one. And by then of course phones will probably be implanted directly in the brain or something like that. :-)

We saw it here. The planets were so bright and looked like you could reach out and touch them.

Hot damn! Go you!
