Waterfire

In case anyone was wondering what sophiaserpentia and I ended up doing last weekend after we canceled our New York trip, here at last is the answer. We decided to go all the way to Rhode Island (a whole hour away by car!) to go to Waterfire. Neither of us had ever been to this event before. We thought about getting a hotel room and staying in Rhode Island but decided it wasn't worth spending the money so we went there and back in one afternoon/evening.




There were gondolas on the water! How cool is that? And in the other boat you can see wood being transported along the river for the fires to be lit in a little while.


We encountered strangely dressed dancers. In this pic, they had surrounded a hapless tourist. :-)


This was the scene prior to the fires being lit.


Boats full of people dressed entirely in black came through with torches, lighting the fires. All the while, wonderful relaxing music was being piped all along the river.

We sat for a long time just looking at all the fires.


One last parting view as we made our way back to the car (when the crowds started getting to us it was time to leave!)

SO and I went to a couple of Waterfires when he lived in Providence (they have them from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, if I remember correctly). Very cool! I wish I'd had a camera.

Yes, according to their web site they do these once every two weeks, during the warmer months. I almost didn't bring my camera - and I'm so glad I did! :)
