Of course the groundhog saw his shadow today, meaning six more weeks of winter. (Or, I suppose, six more weeks of summer for those of you below the equator! Does it work that way too? :-) ) Eh, whatever... it means we are at the winter halfway mark here...it's getting noticeably lighter outside, and Spring will come!!! Yes!!!

And I've got little green daffodil tips peeping out from the soil!

I think that this is a location thing. We had totally overcast skies today. There would be no way that she would be able to see her shadow. Other areas might also have different responses for the shadow issue. And who decided on the gender of this little critter? I have never understood this. We are just recovering from a major snow fall/storm and will get another one soon. So what does that mean for us in Chicago?

It was sunny here today, so I'm not surprised it would be sunny in wherever in PA they do that groundhog thing. What it means for you in Chicago? You get six more weeks of winter, according to the calendar (since spring equinox arrives in six weeks.) However we both know the weather doesn't always listen to the calendar! The whole groundhog day thing is very silly, which is why I like it. :)

We have our own ground hog here. I just do not watch the news. Every city has their own as well. Basically our winter is just starting. We normally do not get snow until February. Before February we only get an inch here and an inch there. We just got 10 in and more is on the way... It was like this last year as well.

I just discovered Massachusetts has a female groundhog (who sees or doesn't see her shadow!)

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/02/03/a_shadow_seen_means_6_more_weeks_til_green/

Of course she saw her shadow here yesterday.

I just found this poem that tells of where this came from
" As the light grows longer
The cold grows stronger
If Candlemas be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight
If Candlemas be cloud and snow
Winter will be gone and not come again
A farmer should on Candlemas day
Have half his corn and half his hay
On Candlemas day if thorns hang a drop
You can be sure of a good pea crop "
I also have heard why it really is meaningless. If the groundhog is able to see its shadow there is to be 6 weeks more of winter, or it the groundhog does not see its shadow spring is going to arrive in 6 weeks. As far as I can figure out, spring will arrive in 6 weeks or so... LOL
