The big blackout

I didn't find out about the blackout until nearly 11pm last night because
secret_willow and I were out seeing a movie. (The film: "Camp" -- really REALLY excellent film, now tied with "Bend it Like Beckham" for my personal favorites of 2003 so far.) I watched TV news broadcasts for a long time, and have seen some amazing photos on the NY Times web site this morning. I think it's partly because I'm from New York, that I'm so fascinated by this latest ordeal NY City has had to endure (and many other areas too, of course, including my beloved Toronto). I'm horrified by the idea of being trapped in the subway or an elevator, since I'm somewhat claustrophobic. I'm glad I'm not in New York right now, or any of the other affected areas -- it's nice having electricity especially for air conditioning and computer access! But at the same time I think I appreciate such events because they disrupt our day-to-day lives, for better or worse, shaking up our daily routines. (I like travel for much the same reason--weeks and months may blur together but that trip will be stand out in my memory later.) I still remember my excitement over the 1965 blackout, which wasn't a nuisance for me, just something fun and different for a 9 year old child!
