Here are a few pics from last weekend's NY trip.

Ground Zero
Our hotel was in the financial district, very close to where the World Trade Center towers once stood (a.k.a. "ground zero"). This was my first time seeing the ruins of 9/11/2001. As I looked through the fence I noticed grass growing in the hole in the ground -- new life. If you look closely you can see a little green.

seaport
After that not-so-cheerful sight we walked over to South Street Seaport. It was raining so we didn't get to explore outside much, and inside it was just another mall with the same old stores that are in every mall, USA. So we left and went to The Village.

lesbian statues
At Christopher Street we found the Queer Statues! Cool! I remember reading about them in the newspaper but I'd never actually seen them before. Here are the lesbians. :) After that we went to Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookstore: the first gay bookstore I ever set foot in, way back when I was still in my teens. I was glad to see it was still there.

ny
A parting glance at New York as we made our escape on the Chinatown bus after the horrible fan event the following day.

I've only been to Manhattan twice. It is always awe-inspiring.

I seem to have two reactions to being in Manhattan and they're completely contradictory:

1) Wow, this place rocks!
2) Get me out of here! :)

Hah! You hit the nail on the head. Nice place to visit, but not at 5 p.m. when the buildings empty out into the streets. I would not be able to drive there.

No one I know who lives in Manhattan owns a car!

Thanks for posting them.

Did you read the story behind the statues?

I did, but I have mush-for-brains and really don't remember what it said! This is where the Stonewall riots took place (there is a small plaque elsewhere on the same block commemorating that) so I'm sure the statues were erected there to honor that. I was very excited to see them!

Neat pics. :) I saw the statues and Ground Zero from an open air tour bus when I was there. Next time I'd like to do more walking around on that end of the island.

Thanks for the pics I have never been to New York City. I have been to the state but that is way different from what I hear...

Yes, upstate New York is a totally different planet than the city! :)

So true!
